How I feel about men’s skinny jeans

Since I believe fashion is very much related to design, I feel this will be of somewhat interest to you designers out there. As of the past few years, I’ve noticed a trend in fashion, most notably men’s fashion. Everything became tighter, smaller, and more fitted. Guys on the street started sporting around a faux hawk and began to take better care of themselves. I really had no problem with this new fashion trend and thought it was a more professional look.

Then came the skinny jeans. To be clear, I’m not talking about straight legs or fitted jeans. I’m talking about the emo-wearing-urban-outfitters-selling skinny jeans that gives men curves where there were never meant to be curves. You all know what I’m talking about. You’ve seen them in that bright green, paired with skin-tight v-neck t shirts.

This trend is the equivalent to the bell bottoms, afros, and tye dye shirts of the 70′s. I’m writing this as a warning and defense for this generation. Trust me, if it doesn’t look cool now, it’s not going to look any cooler in the future. To be fair, I will have to say there is a very small percentage of guys who can pull off this look. (Usually it’s because these guys are so skinny that skinny jeans fit them like normal jeans.) But to the rest of those guys who wear way too skinny jeans for their body, you should start coming up with an answer to tell your kids when they ask you the same question you asked your parents.

  1. Skinny jeans are nothing new. It’s a recycled trend. They lookd good if you’re skinny, and they don’t if you’re not.

Also, calling them “emo pants” is wrong. Punk and heavy metal fans already wore them since long ago.
